1
1On a Sabbath, while he was going through the grainfields, his disciples 2plucked and ate some heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands.
2
But some of the Pharisees said, 3"Why are you doing 4what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath?"
3
And Jesus answered them, 5"Have you not read 6what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him:
4
how he entered the house of God and took and ate 7the bread of the Presence, 8which is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and also gave it to those with him?"
5
And he said to them, 9"The Son of Man is lord of the Sabbath."
6
On another Sabbath, 10he entered the synagogue 11and was teaching, and a man was there whose right hand was withered.
7
And the scribes and the Pharisees 12watched him, to see whether he would heal on the Sabbath, 13so that they might find a reason to accuse him.
8
But 14he knew their thoughts, and he said to the man with the withered hand, "Come and stand here." And he rose and stood there.
9
And Jesus said to them, "I ask you, 15is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to destroy it?"
10
And 16after looking around at them all he said to him, "Stretch out your hand." And 17he did so, and his hand was restored.
11
But they were filled with 18fury and discussed with one another what they might do to Jesus.
12
In these days 19he went out to the mountain to pray, and all night he continued in prayer to God.
13
And when day came, 20he called his disciples 21and 22chose from them twelve, whom he named 23apostles:
14
Simon, 24whom he named Peter, and 25Andrew his brother, and 26James and John, and Philip, and Bartholomew,
15
and 27Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon who was called 28the Zealot,
16
and 29Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.
17
And 30he came down with them and stood on a level place, with 31a great crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the seacoast of 32Tyre and Sidon,
18
who came to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. 33And those who were troubled with unclean spirits were cured.
19
And all the crowd 34sought to touch him, for 35power came out from him and healed them all.
20
And 36he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, 37and said: "Blessed are you who are poor, for 38yours is the kingdom of God.
21
39"Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you shall be satisfied. 40"Blessed are you who weep now, for you shall laugh.
22
"Blessed are you when 41people hate you and when they 42exclude you and revile you and 43spurn your name as evil, 44on account of the Son of Man!
23
45Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven; for 46so their fathers did to the prophets.
24
47"But woe to you who are rich, 48for you 49have received your consolation.
25
"Woe to you who are full now, for 50you shall be hungry. "Woe to 51you who laugh now, 52for you shall mourn and weep.
26
"Woe to you, 53when all people speak well of you, for 54so their fathers did to 55the false prophets.
27
"But I say to you who hear, 56Love your enemies, 57do good to those who hate you,
28
58bless those who curse you, 59pray for those who abuse you.
29
60To one who 61strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also, and from one who takes away your cloak do not withhold your tunic either.
30
62Give to everyone who begs from you, and from one who takes away your goods do not demand them back.
31
And 63as you wish that others would do to you, do so to them.
32
64"If you love those who love you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them.
33
And if you do good to those who do good to you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners do the same.
34
And 65if you 66lend to those from whom you expect to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to get back the same amount.
35
But 67love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return, and your reward will be great, and 68you will be sons of 69the Most High, for 70he is kind to the ungrateful and the evil.
36
71Be merciful, even as 72your Father is merciful.
37
"Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; 73forgive, and you will be forgiven;
38
74give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put 75into your lap. For 76with the measure you use it will be measured back to you."
39
He also told them a parable: 77"Can a blind man lead a blind man? Will they not both fall into a pit?
40
78A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is 79fully trained will be like his teacher.
41
80Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but 81do not notice the log that is in your own eye?
42
How can you say to your brother, 'Brother, let me take out the speck that is in your eye,' when you yourself do not see the log that is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the speck that is in your brother's eye.
43
"For 82no good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit,
44
for 83each tree is known by its own fruit. For figs are not gathered from thornbushes, nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush.
45
84The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces 85evil, 86for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.
46
87"Why 88do you call me 'Lord, Lord,' and not do what I tell you?
47
89Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like:
48
he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built.
49
90But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and 91the ruin of that house was great."
