1This is why I left you in Crete, so that you might put what remained into order, and 2appoint elders in every town as I directed you--

3if anyone is above reproach, the husband of one wife,a and his children are believers and not open to the charge of 4debauchery or insubordination.

For an overseer,b5as God's steward, must be above reproach. He must not 6be arrogant or quick-tempered or a drunkard or violent 7or greedy for gain,

but hospitable, a lover of good, self-controlled, upright, holy, 8and disciplined.

He must 9hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in 10soundc doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it.

For there are many who are insubordinate, 11empty talkers and deceivers, especially those of 12the circumcision party.

They must be silenced, since 13they are upsetting whole families by teaching 14for shameful gain what they ought not to teach.

15One of the Cretans,d a prophet of their own, said, "Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons."e

This testimony is true. Therefore 16rebuke them 17sharply, that they 18may be sound in the faith,

19not devoting themselves to Jewish myths and 20the commands of people 21who turn away from the truth.
